I have been doing a lot thinking lately concerning the prevailing situation in the world at large. Speaking specifically from this end of the world, Nigeria. The truth must be spoken, since the emergence of the COVID 19 Pandemic, our children’s effective learning has become hindered as ages between 2- 10 years i.e Early Years and Primary School kids find it very difficult to keep up the pace of learning online.
Frankly speaking, Learning online with the different platforms has been very instrumental and helpful to learning with the right educational tech tools put in place. During the period of the lockdown here in Lagos, children within the said age bracket could still cope with the entire learning process offered online with the help of their parents while they stayed at home.
Sadly to say, since the lockdown was lifted almost a month now with both parents working to fend for the family, the children are now left at home to learn online without any form of follow up or supervision. Truly parents are not to be blamed for this, as they return home tired from work. This is really an issue to be looked into.
As an educator, head of school and an educational consultant. I have received a lot of complaints from my parents on how they cannot cope with the online class because of their work and very importantly, the epileptic power supply as their children sometimes cannot go online due to their phones and tablets being down. Our very competent teachers are also faced with this issue.
